The theme for this summit — co-sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) — was ‘weaving strengths for the future of patient safety throughout the healthcare continuum’.
At the event, global leaders, experts and stakeholders came together to discuss and shape the future of patient safety. Their focus was on advancing international efforts to improve healthcare quality and safeguard patients worldwide. Member state ministers of health discussed and explored effective strategies to address key priority areas in patient safety.

Dr Rosie Benneyworth, Interim Chief Executive Officer at the Health Services Safety Investigations Body (HSSIB), said: “It was an honour to represent HSSIB and the impact we’re making in England on this important global platform. Our independent patient safety body is unique and many other countries are very interested in how we work. By collaborating at an international level we can actively contribute to the aims of the summit, to share our strengths, drive rapid change in safety culture and ultimately improve healthcare. Patient safety is a global concern.”
The Global Ministerial Summit for Patient Safety was initiated by the UK Department of Health and the German Federal Ministry of Health, with the first event held in London in 2016. The summits have significantly contributed to raising awareness and driving the global patient safety movement.
