Jonathan Back

Jonathan joined us as an analyst after previously holding academic positions at University College London and King’s College London. He has a PhD from Loughborough University, where he is a Visiting Research Fellow in Safety Science.

His work at the Health Services Safety Investigations Body (HSSIB) focuses on improving the management of safety and understanding inequalities. He has led on the thematic analysis of recurring patient safety risks and medical device investigations.

His long-term aim is to embed safety management principles across the health and care system by working closely with those who have regulatory influence. For example in 2024, Jonathan worked with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to support their development of approaches to patient safety management

Jonathan has authored over 50 peer-reviewed academic papers and his work has been cited over 1,200 times. He has contributed to research funding applications that have been awarded over £5 million in total. He maintains an active interest in Resilience Engineering for health and care, and Machine Learning (Artificial Intelligence) to identify insights from safety reports.
